One morning, as Ian McEwan was waking from anxious dreams...

Cockroach-icity must be in the eye of the beholder

I read a lot of Ian McEwan's at one point, and my feeling was that WE would one day be judged for promoting his work as "heavyweight". McEwan linking himself to a genuine heavyweight, Franz Kafka, is seriously not fair to Kafka. Kafka, more than any other writer I know, was prescient about the oligarchical state swallowing up capitalism/reality/individuality et al. McEwan has been a beneficiary of this process - think of all the state-funded talkfests our author has attended, state-funded prizes he has been awarded, state-subsidised schools that have bought his texts, state-prescribed curricula compelling young people to read his work - and now HE is calling Brexiteers/the People cochroaches for asking Big Brother to back off a little, so they might have a more autonomous life and enjoy a picnic or two.  Read Metamorphosis and then take a look at David Martin's  https://quadrant.org.au/magazine/2019/12/ian-mcewan-does-la-cucaracha/
